The selection of PP flame retardants should consider multiple factors, including compatibility, cost effectiveness, precipitation resistance, decomposition temperature, and particle size. PP flame retardant formulations offer a wide range of raw materials, each with varying physical and chemical properties, water solubility, temperature resistance, and particle size. Below, we briefly explain several selection principles.

1. Flame retardant durability in the resin: Flame retardants must exhibit excellent durability and compatibility to prevent rapid migration from the product, potentially leading to loss of flame retardancy over its lifespan.

2. Consider the impact of the addition of PP flame retardants on the inherent properties of plastic products. Large amounts of flame retardants can significantly impact the performance of plastic products. Furthermore, compatibilizers, crosslinkers, and lubricants may be added to improve mechanical properties and dispersibility. Choosing flame retardants with high flame retardant content can minimize the amount used and the impact on product performance.

3. Compatibility of the flame retardant's thermal decomposition temperature with the resin's temperature. On the one hand, the flame retardant's thermal decomposition temperature must match the resin's processing temperature. Generally, the flame retardant's decomposition temperature should be approximately 20°C higher than the processing temperature. On the other hand, the flame retardant's thermal decomposition temperature must match the resin's thermal degradation temperature. Generally, the flame retardant's thermal decomposition temperature must be approximately 60°C lower than the resin's thermal degradation temperature.

4. Optimal cost-effectiveness: While meeting product performance requirements, choose low-cost flame retardants whenever possible to reduce product price.

5. Flame retardant compatibility with the resin: Choose flame retardants with good compatibility with the resin to maximize their flame retardant properties.

6. Properties of the flame retardant. Refining the flame retardant's particle size not only improves its flame retardancy but also significantly enhances its mechanical and other properties at the same content. Inorganic flame retardants can be made into microparticles and coated with organic and inorganic materials to improve compatibility with the resin. Surface coupling treatment can also be used. In plastic flame-retardant formulations, especially those containing inorganic flame retardants, surface coupling treatment is required. Dispersants, toughening agents, and plasticizers are also added to improve compatibility between the flame retardant and the resin to compensate for any degradation of the original performance caused by the addition of the flame retardant.

In addition to the aforementioned points, the selection principles for PP flame retardants must also fully consider the requirements of resin modification, such as those for reinforcement, toughening, and oxidation resistance. These selection principles should be adjusted appropriately and are not set in stone.
